Mission Statement

I'm told that from the time I first learned to walk I would go around our home singing and one of my earliest remembered Christmas gifts was a Sear's 78 RPM record player that became well used. Music has always been a part of my life. I would have liked to be a professional musician but I don't have the sort of brain to quickly memorize and retain all those notes so I became a teacher of piano and a piano technician. I love my work. Being with music every day and bringing its' joys and benefits to others is my privilege and my mission.

Being a technician who plays myself helps me understand the musician's point of view. I feel passionate about having the piano in good shape for the pianist. Often my work means keeping an old instrument in good working condition until the owner can afford restoration work or a newer instrument. The most important thing is to listen to the customer and meet his or her needs and to give good value.

1) Piano Tuning

My preferred method is to tune by ear using a digital device only to assess the general level of the pitch before I begin and to set A at 440 BPS. Tuning is an art as much as a science. Each piano is unique and customers also differ in their needs; for instance, singers often like to have a greater octave stretch in the treble than instrumentalists. Tuning by ear also helps me to "set the tuning pin" so the piano stays in good tune longer.

2) Repair And Restoration

In Home: Minor action repair and service including minor regulation, Hammer voicing, replacing broken and missing strings, pedal adjustment etc.

In Shop: Major action and soundboard work including complete regulation of the action, hammer replacement, restringing, pin-block replacement, damper work, a complete rebuild of the piano.

I do all work myself hiring out only casework and refinishing. Every effort is made to retain the uniqueness and integrity of the piano often meaning that new parts must be modified so they match the originals.

3) Piano Lessons

Piano instruction, college and conservatory trained teacher located in the City of Decatur just off Ponce de Leon. Beginners to advanced, lessons will include sight reading and theory/harmony lessons and cover classics, pop standards and jazz. You can make progress even if you have only a limited amount of time to practice. Patient and cheerful teacher in a relaxing atmosphere. $30. for a 40 minute lesson.
