The Exam Is Scored By Using Extremely Sensitive Electronic Equipment To Measure The Deviation Of The Candidate's Tuning From The Standard Thus Established. Candidates Who Use Electronic Tuning Devices In Their Work Must Nevertheless Demonstrate Their Ability To Tune By Ear, Unaided By Electronics. The Technical Exam Requires The Candidate To Demonstrate Professional-level Skills In Assembling A Grand And A Vertical Piano Action (the Mechanical Component Of The Piano) And In Making All The Complicated Adjustments (called "regulation") So That They Function Properly. Nickels Piano Service is a Morris based business offering Piano Tuning, Piano Repair, Voicing and Maintenance. Nickels Piano Service also offers Piano Humidity Control System Installation, and Piano Cleaning.

2) Summary

Pianos are complex instruments that require regular servicing in order to sound and play properly. Regular tuning is important, but there is more needed in order to keep a piano performing and sounding its best. The piano action, the components that are operated by the keys to produce the sound, need periodic adjustments. And the piano also needs periodic voicing to keep the tone sounding its best instead of becoming harsh and brassy.

3) Standard Service

My Standard Service includes tuning the piano, tightening the piano bench bolts and cleaning the piano key tops. This service normally takes about an hour. If the piano has not been serviced recently there may be other work needed. This work is outside of the scope of the Standard Service and will require additional cost. Of course, this service also includes record keeping and sending a tuning reminder card for future service.

4) Extended Service

I call my extended service Advantage Plus. If you choose to enroll in this plan, I will perform all the items in my Standard Service, plus I will do other maintenance items to improve the touch, tone, or make minor repairs of your piano. This service will take approximately 15 - 30 minutes beyond my Standard Service. To qualify for my Advantage Plus program you must agree to two things:
1.) Commit to two or more tunings per year;
2.) Pre-schedule the next appointment.
This service keeps your instrument performing at its best and you can cancel at any time and revert back to my Standard Service.

Your piano is an instrument of extraordinary promise which can bring you and your family a lifetime of enjoyment. To ensure its performance over that lifetime, it is important to have your piano serviced regularly by a qualified professional. Complete piano service should include periodic regulation and voicing in addition to tuning.
