Mississippi is the poorest state in the U.S. and suffered significant losses from the onslaught of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, creating further issues for its residents.

The Mississippi Delta is widely considered the birthplace of the blues. This musical style incorporates repeated lyrics and musical phrases to reinforce an underlying chord progression. It has its roots in the songs composed and sung by African-American slaves before the Civil War and has continued to develop since that time. Important historic events are often described in Mississippi blues compositions. For example, the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was described and immortalized in Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Rising High Water Blues." Tupelo is the birthplace of Elvis Presley and is a frequent destination for the singer's many fans.

Jackson, Gulfport and Hattiesburg are the largest cities in Mississippi. Cotton farming continues to be a major factor in the economy of the state, with large commercial farms dominating the marketplace.
