Originally settled by the Spanish in 1567, North Carolina was soon controlled by the English and dominated by subsistence farming and hunting until the Revolutionary War. Roanoke Island is located just off the coast of mainland North Carolina and was the site for one of the greatest historical mysteries in early U.S. history. The Roanoke Colony was established in 1585 and again in 1587; both groups of settlers vanished, seemingly without a trace. Although no evidence has been found to support any explanation for the disappearance of these colonists, many theories have been presented in an effort to explain this unusual series of events.

One of the 13 colonies that declared independence from the British Crown, North Carolina was primarily agrarian at the time of the Revolutionary War. The state depended heavily on cotton and tobacco production to provide financial support for its residents; as a result, slavery was commonplace and accepted throughout much of the state as a necessary part of the plantation system. North Carolina fought on the side of the Confederacy during the Civil War and struggled during Reconstruction to rebuild its economic base.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most popular natural attractions for tourists visiting North Carolina. Other cultural and entertainment options include the North Carolina Zoo and the Biltmore Estate, the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the U.S. National Whitewater Center and the beaches of the Outer Banks area. History buffs can visit the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail or the Wright Brothers National Memorial to learn more about the colorful and varied history of North Carolina.
