1) Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine

What is it?

Functional Medicine is the medicine of the future. It is Chinese Medicine at its finest. It is science-based, patient-centered medicine, focused on the whole patient and their overall health. At its core is the empowerment of the patient, achieved through thorough assessment of history, concerns and individualized goals. We will work with you to get to the root cause of your concerns, respecting the complex interconnectedness of the body’s systems. We look at the why and the what - why did the concerns develop in the first place, and what is going on internally. Your care plan will complement the work we do in-office with tools for lifestyle change and nutritional recalibration. This may include exploring what feedback loop systems are not working as well as they should, what receptor sites are not performing up to par, or what nutrients you are lacking in your diet. Our ultimate goal will be to bring you back to your personal equilibrium. Functional Medicine relies on partnership; we welcome each patient into the community of support we’ve built over 15 years of practice.

The 6 principles of

Functional Medicine

1. Acknowledging the biochemical individuality of each human being, based on the concepts of genetic and environmental uniqueness

2. Awareness of the evidence that supports a patient-centered rather than a disease-centered approach to treatment;

3. Seeking a dynamic balance among the internal and external body, mind, and spirit

4. Addressing the web-like interconnections of internal physiological factors;

5. Identification of health as a positive vitality - not merely the absence of disease - and emphasizing those factors that encourage the enhancement of a vigorous physiology;

6. Promoting organ resilience as the means to enhance the health span, not just the life span, of each patient. (1)

Starting at the Root

At the root of many chronic symptoms are the adrenal glands. Abnormal adrenal function can affect everything from your energy to your sleep patterns. The adrenals secrete a steroid hormone called cortisol which fluctuates throughout the day. It should be the highest in the morning to give us energy and drop down throughout the day. People who have difficulty waking in the morning, trouble falling asleep or low energy throughout the day may have adrenal rhythm issues and/or poor blood sugar control. Through lifestyle changes, acupuncture, herbal and nutritional support we can correct these patterns.

Who qualifies as a Functional Medicine practitioner?

The Institute for Functional Medicine oversees a rigorous, standardized education and certification system that takes years to complete. We have invested in this certification in order to provide the most comprehensive service for our patients, as well as have access to the most current research, innovation and clinical practice guidelines within this field. We encourage you to explore this resource further for more insight and references.

2) Medical Acupuncture

The terms “medical”, “modern” or “scientific” all convey the same idea that the approach of acupuncture is based on the current understanding of the structure and function of the body.

The essential features of Western medical acupuncture are:

conventional methods of medical history and examination are used, to establish a conventional diagnosis

the focus areas of the body are identified for acupuncture to address

the appropriate treatment is given that is tailored to the individual

the treatment is repeated according to the patient’s response

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture produces many of its effects by stimulating nerve fibers in the skin and muscle. These sensory nerves form a network in the layers of the skin. Needling one of these nerves creates an effect that is known as an “axon reflex”. Various substances are released as a result, causing blood vessels to dilate, so that local blood flow increases. The blood flow increases in the deeper tissues, which encourages tissue healing, as in minor injuries, and also improves the function of local glands.

Acupuncture improves blood flow and promotes local healing.

Acupuncture has a calming effect and improves wellbeing.

Acupuncture reduces pain in the segment where the needles are inserted.

Acupuncture inactivates myofascial trigger points.

Acupuncture stimulates small myelinated fibers in the skin and muscle.

3) Nutrition

Food Allergies and Sensitivities

Food allergies or sensitivities can be the number one underlying cause of poor health in most people. Imagine if you eat the same thing day after day and you suffer from chronic health conditions: chronic headaches, joint pain, muscle pain, sinus congestion, eczema, anxiety, depression or debilitating fatigue. You are likely suffering from a sensitivity or allergy to the foods you are eating.

What are IgG and IgE Antibodies?

IgG antibodies are associated with “delayed” reactions - symptoms can appear hours or days after eating certain foods. IgE antibodies are immediate reactions - difficulty breathing, rash, headaches, anaphylactic response. Testing for both the IgG and IgE antibodies can give us a complete picture of what your body is doing on a physiological level and how much inflammation is being produced by what you are eating. IgG reactions are the most common form of immunologically mediated food intolerances.

How can we help?

Provide a personalized lifestyle plan through utilizing Functional Medicine and other diagnostic tools like allergy testing or BIA (link to page) when needed to suit your needs. This plan may include: foods to avoid and include, caloric needs to maintain, lose or gain weight and individualized nutritional support to solidify the lifestyle and diet changes

Target specific concerns such as high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes and weight loss

Provide reliable, objective information

Translate the latest scientific findings into information that is easy to understand and use

4) Fertility

Chinese Medicine and Fertility

Your body and any symptoms you experience tell a story. In Chinese medicine, the energetic forces within the body are the key players in this story. The Chinese medical view of the menstrual cycle is complementary to the Western view. Two phases, Yin and Yang, correspond with the follicular and luteal phases. Just as you may have heard acupuncture described in terms of the movement of “Qi” energy, the Yin and Yang are also energetic in nature, meaning they can fall out of balance with one another (12). Acupuncture and other Chinese medicine techniques such as the use of herbs, work to rebalance or build certain energies that your symptoms may point to. We will not only work to resolve these imbalances, but will also look at what may have caused them in the first place, including stress levels, sleep habits, diet and environmental exposure to toxins.

Acupuncture and IVF

Infertility can be devastating to deal with, and deciding to engage in IVF is a significant commitment. We can help support you in this process. Numerous studies have produced clear support for the role acupuncture can play when dealing with infertility, often showing 60-80% increases in rates of pregnancy as compared to control (1, 3). Incorporating acupuncture treatments on the day of an embryo transfer, in addition to pre and post transfer, can increase your chances of success. Acupuncture can relax the uterus, increase blood flow to the reproductive system, stabilize hormones, reduce stress and promote calm, increase the uterine lining thickness, and improve egg quality (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). It has also been shown to improve sperm quality in men (8). Complementing acupuncture with Chinese herbal medicine and additional lifestyle interventions is proving to be an even stronger recipe for success (6).

5) First Line Therapy (flt)

FLT is a therapeutic lifestyle change program that targets the underlying cause of chronic illnesses by incorporating a specialized eating plan, exercise, nutritional supplements and stress management.

FLT uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to assess your body composition. BIA measures body fat in relation to lean body mass. Altered body composition can significantly increase your risk to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and more. BIA measures the fluid inside and outside of your cells along with the potential for inflammation in body tissues. One of the most powerful tools in controlling the aging process and restoring vitality is to improve your muscle-to-fat ratio. Your BIA results help guide your treatment protocol and your progress.
