Henry D. Fishel helps the individuals and couples to see their difficulties as challenges; to accept their hurdles essentially as bad habits. Ineffective ways of acting, learned along life's path, like all bad habits, can be unlearned and substituted with better methods of responding. Troubled people can learn that there is a profound difference between regret and guilt and thus feel freed from the unnecessary burdens that are carried by so many of us, and that make us so often assume a defensive posture.
