Named in honor of one of the English Channel Islands, New Jersey is the second wealthiest state in the U.S. and enjoys a median household income of more than $70,000 per year. Northeastern New Jersey is located in close proximity to New York and allows many residents to enjoy a convenient commute to work in the big city while retaining the comforts of smaller-town living. The forested central portion of the state is known as the Pine Barrens and is said to be the home of the legendary Jersey Devil, a monster that allegedly was born to a human mother.

New Jersey soldiers also fought on the side of the Union during the Civil War, but no battles were waged on New Jersey soil during this conflict. The Industrial Revolution represented a turning point in the state's economy and was responsible for much of its later success. Financial services, chemical engineering and pharmaceuticals are among the primary economic activities in New Jersey.

The population of New Jersey is diverse and includes many minority groups from all around the world. The state also has a rich musical heritage; Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen and Lauryn Hill all hail from the Garden State and have earned acclaim and popularity in their respective musical genres.
