Mission Statement
To provide San Francisco quality Attorneys assistance as a Patent Attorney, Software Patent, Copyright Law and Trademark Attorney.
Richardson Intellectual Property Law, P.C. meeting your Attorneys needs since 1993.
After graduating with a bachelors degree in mathematics and computer science in 1969, Dan Richardson started his career working as a computer software developer for the U.S. Air Force as an officer, and after separating from the Air Force, for major corporations as programmer, systems analyst, team leader, project manager and department manager. He started his own computer consulting company in 1977, providing business application software development and management consulting services to San Francisco Bay Area businesses.
Following his interest in the law while working as a computer consultant, Dan decided that with the dramatic changes in business triggered by the impact of computers and software, there was a need for attorneys who were experienced in the high technology arena, particularly in areas related to computer software. So he decided to change career fields and become an attorney working in those areas. After graduating from law school, he was admitted to the California State Bar in 1993.
Dan followed his interest and after being admitted to the California State Bar, he took the Bar examination for the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) . He passed the USPTO Bar and was then registered to represent clients in need of patent services before the USPTO.
Dan is now an intellectual property attorney, practicing in the areas of patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret and intellectual property litigation. Dan uses his expertise in the law of high technology to help clients get the best value from their intellectual property and for protecting their Intellectual Property rights.

1) Prior Art Patent Searches
I’ve found through years of experience in working with inventors that even if they don’t find the invention in the market, there can be several reasons for this.
First, the invention may have been patented before, but for a variety of reasons, either never made it to market, or was taken off the market.
Second, even if the invention was not previously patented, there are already one or more close variations of it that have been patented, such that it is unlikely the present invention will be able to pass the “obviousness” standard required of new patents.
The only way to look at these possibilities is to do a patent search of previously issued or published applications, often called "prior art"..
2) Patent Application For Registration
In order to be granted a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (or foreign patent office), you must first prepare and submit a patent application for registration. Such an application for patent registration must comply with all of the laws of the United States.
I am experienced in the preparation and submission of a patent application for registration. I will prepare your patent application for registration accurately, to your specifications and professionally to give it the best chance for an issued patent.
3) Patent Application Prosecution
4) Patent Litigation
After you have a patent issued to you for your invention, you have the right to file a lawsuit (“litigation”) against any person or entity that is practicing your invention without your permission. If their patent infringement is done willfully with full knowledge of your patent, it is possible you could get an award of three times the usual damages.
5) Patent Licenses
Most of the inventors that I work with are not interested in either manufacturing or practicing their invention. They just want the money from having some other person or entity producing or practicing their invention.
In this case, they must negotiate a written license to both allow the other person or entity to use or practice the invention and to spell out the royalty that they will receive for allowing them to use the invention.
