The mind and the brain are inextricably linked. The genetic predisposition and temperament one is born with, how one experiences the events of childhood and one's current stressors all contribute to disturbances in mood, anxiety levels and problems with thinking. One may develop patterns of thinking that interfere with achieving life goals, affect one's ability to form intimate relationships or achieve contentment with life. Psychotherapy (talk therapy) can, over time, alter one's relationship with oneself and therefore with others. It can open up spaces, metaphorically speaking, that were closed off due to the negative thoughts one had and may not even have been aware one had. I practice exploratory psychodynamic psychotherapy with modifications for some problems. I can also prescribe medications for problems that are known to respond to medications. If medication is indicated, I take the time to work with patients to ensure the right fit. Everyone is different and has different responses to medication. Medication can often be helpful in enabling a fuller engagement in psychotherapy.
